  • noun a single sample of an analog signal which is stored as a 16-bit digital number, meaning that there are 65 536 possible levels. A ‘16-bit sound card’ can sometimes mean that the card generates 16-bit samples, but it can also mean that it generates 8-bit samples, but fits into a 16-bit expansion slot.
