  • A farce by Georges Feydeau, first performed in 1907in Paris. John Mortimer provided the translation for the1966 National Theatre production directed by Jacques Charon at theOld Vic; he also wrote the screenplay for the 1967 film version starringRex Harrison and Rachel Roberts. Mortimer changed Harrison'spart slightly after the actor pleaded, "I don't think audienceswould like a totally impotent man as the hero. They wouldn't acceptme. Couldn't I be made just a little impotent now and then?"

    The plot involves the love affairs, real and imagined, ofthe confused household of insurance agent Victor Emmanuel Chandebise.tragedy looms but is averted when the misunderstandings and mistakenidentities are cleared up.
