A Patriot for Me

  • John Osborne's play about the career of Alfred Redl,a homosexual officer in the Austro-Hungarian Army at the turn of the20th century. Some critics consider it Osborne's best work. Based on fact, the play describes how Redl was blackmailed into becoming a spy becauseof his homosexuality. It includes a transvestite ball scene that causedparticular offence to the Lord Chamberlain, who withhelda licence. Accordingly, the play was first performed as a privateclub production for the English Stage Society in 1966, whenMaximilian Schell created the part of Redl. There was a Broadwayproduction in 1969. A successful revival was staged in 1983 at theHaymarket, with Alan Bates in the leading role.
