  • A sensational play sometimes described as the first Englishmelodrama. First produced at Covent Garden in 1802, it wasan adaptation by Thomas Holcroft (1744 - 1809) of the French dramaCoelina, ou l'enfant de mystère (1800) by Guilbert dePixérécourt (1773 - 1844), who was not acknowledged.The plot involves a murder planned by Count Romaldo in order to marrya rich heiress. A Tale of Mystery was a great success, andthe melodrama soon became a mainstay of the secondary theaters.
