A Touch of the Poet

  • A play by the US dramatist Eugene O'Neill. It waswritten in about 1940 and first performed in 1957 in Stockholm. KimStanley and Helen Hayes starred in the 1958 Broadway production, while Jason Robards Jr won great acclaim in a 1977 revival. The story involves the growing cultural gap between Con Melody, an immigrant, and his US-born son.

The drama was intended to be one of a nine-play cycle aboutthe same family, tracing its fortunes from the early 19th to the mid20th century. Although outlines of several others were drawn up, ATouch of the Poet was the only play in the sequence to be completed before illness disease brought O'Neill's writing career to an end.
