Abbots Bromley Horn or Antler Dance

  • A folk dance performed in the small village of Abbots Bromley, Staffordshire. Originally performed on St Bartholomew's Day (24 August),it now takes place on the Monday after the first Sunday after 4 September. The six horn dancers, all male as in morris dances, hold reindeerantlers (three of which are painted brown and three white) to their heads as they dance. They are accompanied by a hobby horse, a Maid Marian, a jester, an accordion player, and two boys. The horn sets weighbetween 19 and 25lbs (8.5 - 11.5kg) each. Although there is no record ofthe dance before the 17th century, carbon dating has established that the hornsdate back to Anglo-Saxon times.
