  • An apparatus utilized to connect a modem to a telephone line via an ordinary telephone handset. The handset is cradled in the device in a manner that a speaker and microphone are used to exchange the electrical signals between the computer and the remote site. Rarely used nowadays, as most modems connect directly to the phone line, thus avoiding many of the drawbacks, such as signal degradation.
