Adah Isaacs Menken



  • (Dolores Adios Fuertes; 1835 - 68) US actress, whose careerwas virtually confined to appearing bound to the back of a 'wild'horse in a skimpy costume in Mazeppa, a dramatization of Byron'spoem. Menken, whose beauty was appreciated by Dickens and Swinburne,made her first appearance in this famous equestrian dramain London in 1861; after a year in America she returned to Londonin 1864 to appear in the same role at Astley's amphitheatre.
