altazimuth

Definition

Astronomy

  • Type of telescope mounting which has two separate axes of movement, one for altitude, controlling the angle of the telescope between the horizon and the zenith, and one for azimuth, the point of the compass to which it points. On small telescopes the controls can be manual but some large modern telescopes have altazimuth mountings pointed by computer.
