Altwiener Volkstheater



  • (German: Old Viennese folk theater) A type of improvised folkcomedy popular in the Viennese theater of the early 18th century.It was popularized mainly by the Austrian actors Joseph Stranitsky(1676 - 1726) and Gottfried Prehauser (1699 - 1769). Derivedfrom the Haupt- und Staatsaktionen, the Altwiener Volkstheaterfeatured the wild antics of the Bavarian peasant clown Hanswurst.The genre fell out of favour in the mid 18th century.
