American Viticultural Area

  • any one of the delimited geographical grape-growing areas in the US that have been given appellation status by the Federal Bureau of alcohol, tobacco and Firearms in a system established in 1970 and loosely modelled on the original French AOC system. The main difference is that an AVA is defined only by geographical region, whereas an AOC has extra, complex rules governing the types of grapes, how they are grown and how wine is made in the region. AVAs include the well-known Napa Valley, which itself includes smaller AVAs such as Stags Leap District and Sonoma Valley.
