an ill Beest

  • A contemporary's description of the person who, in 1652, betrayed actors who were performing illegally at the Vere Street Theatre during the Puritan Interregnum. According to the writer the "Beest" informed on the group "causing the poor actors to be routed by the soldiery". William Beeston (see the Beestons) was widely suspected of being the Beest despite being imprisoned himself.
