There has been much speculation about Anne's character. Whilemany have conjectured that Shakespeare's marriage was unhappy, theactor and songwriter Charles Dibdin credited her with divine charms:She hath a way so to controlTo rapture the imprisoned soulAnd sweetest Heaven on earth display,That to be Heaven Ann hath a way;Charles Dibdin: 'Love's Ditty'.
