annular eclipse

Definition

Astronomy

  • An eclipse of the Sun in which the Moon is too far away from the Earth in its orbit to cover the Sun completely. Instead an annulus or ring of the Sun is left showing, so that the Sun’s atmosphere does not become visible. Annular eclipses occur when the Moon is at its farthest from the Earth because of the eccentricity of its orbit.
