ante up

Definition

Slang

  • verb to pay one’s contribution, put one’s money in the common pot. This expression, not to be confused with ‘up the ante’, comes from the preliminary stage in a poker game when one or all of the players must put a stake in the pot. By extension ante up is sometimes used to mean settle accounts or (reluctantly) hand over something demanded.
