  • One of America's early theaters, opened in 1828 in Philadelphiaby the US actor William B. Wood. It immediately engaged in fiercecompetition with the Walnut Street Theatre and the Chestnut StreetTheatre, being a factor in the latter's bankruptcy. Under the forcefulmanagement (1860 - 92) of Louisa Lane Drew (see Drew family)the Arch Street's stock company presented both classic and contemporaryworks, becoming a great success both commercially and artistically.
