  • The central character in John Osborne's play The Entertainer(1957), a struggling survivor from the great days of music hall, partlybased on the veteran comic Max Miller (1895 - 1963). The role was originally played by Laurence Olivier, in a notable departurefrom the classical repertory in which he had made his name. Subsequent revivals have starred Max Wall (1974), Peter Bowles (1986), and Robert Lindsay (2007).
