  • Greek astronomer born around 310BC who attempted to measure distances in the solar system and developed the idea of the planets orbiting the Sun. Aristarchus’s idea of the Sun, not the Earth, as the centre of the universe, was eventually associated with the name of Copernicus nearly 2000 years later.
