  • Acronym for American standard Code for Information Interchange. A binary code computers use to express text and control characters. It was developed to standardize data transmission. There are various ASCII character sets, and in each of them numeric values are assigned to each text or control character. For example, in standard ASCII the number code for the lower case letter c is 99. Also called ASCII code.
