asking rate

  • noun the exact number of runs per over that a batting side needs to score in order to win a match. The asking rate is expressed to one or two decimal points (eg 5.33 runs per over) and, while occasionally used in first-class cricket, is mainly a feature of the limited-overs game.
Citation ‘The asking-rate was less than three when Pietersen dragged a Yuvraj Singh delivery down to deep midwicket’ (Dileep Premachandran, Cricinfo Magazine May 2006)
