  • In the Victorian theater, a hydraulic system for raising orlowering the stage floor. Introduced in 1884 in Austria-Hungary, theiron mechanism used hydraulic pistons under the floor, which was dividedinto large individual platforms. Besides moving up and down, eachplatform could be tilted.
