atomic clock

Definition

Electronics

  • A clock whose accuracy is governed by the natural resonance frequencies of atoms. Atoms resonate at exceptionally consistent frequencies, and when measured precisely provide for highly accurate time readings. atomic clocks which utilize lasers to cool atoms to nearly absolute zero should be able to achieve an error of less than one second per billion years in the not too distant future. Used, for instance, in GPS systems.
