  • A theatrical phrase meaning to abridge, or suddenly conclude, a performance.It is said that the 18th-century comedian Ned Shuter used to lengthen out his performances until a crowd had built up for the next house. An assistant would then call out "Is John Audley here?" as a signal that the play should now be brought to an end.
