Aunt Edna

  • A fictional theatregoer conceived by Terence Rattiganas the epitome of the matinée audience he had to please. Shelater became a widely recognized embodiment of all the forces thatthe Angry Young Men of the 1950s sought to displace. Rattiganintroduced her in his preface to the second volume of his CollectedPlays (1953):
A nice respectable, middle-class, middle-aged maiden lady, with time on her hands and the money to help pass it...Let uscall her Aunt Edna...Aunt Edna is universal...She is alsoimmortal.
