automatic volume control

Cars & Driving

  • noun a car radio circuit which automatically adjusts the volume to the noise level in the car.

  • In a radio receiver, a circuit or device which maintains the output volume at a constant level, despite variations in the input signal. A flight controller, for example, would thus avoid having to adjust the volume when communicating with various aircraft at varying distances. A volume limiter limits the output volume to a predetermined maximum, regardless of the variations in the input signal. Its abbreviation is AVC.
