  • A play by the US dramatist Clifford Odets. It wasfirst performed in 1935 by the Group Theatre at the BelascoTheatre, New York. Its success led to Odets being acclaimed as thecountry's most promising playwright. The story concerns a shrewd Jewishmother who rules her working-class family with an iron hand. She breaksup her son's love affair and pushes her daughter towards a lovelessmarriage. In the end, however, her daughter defies her by elopingwith a gangster. There was an acclaimed revival at the Belasco in 2006.
