balloons

Definitions

Astronomy

  • Balloons have been used as platforms for astronomical instruments since at least 1954, when French astronomers used one to place a telescope above the bulk of the water vapour in the Earth’s atmosphere to allow the water vapour in the atmosphere of Mars to be observed. Despite the advent of satellites, balloons continue to be used as a comparatively cheap and rapid way of getting equipment above the bulk of the Earth’s atmosphere.
