Barnard’s Star

  • The nearest star to the solar system after the Alpha Centauri system, 5.9 light years from the Sun. Barnard’s star may have planets and has been proposed as a promising destination for the first interstellar flight from Earth. Barnard’s star has the largest proper motion of any star in the sky, about 10 seconds per year. This motion was discovered by the US astronomer E E Barnard (1857–1923), also the discoverer of Barnard’s Loop.
