The name of a slow-witted male character (played by Paul Henry) in the long-running TV soap opera Crossroads was adopted as a nickname for unfortunate males and lasted into the late 1990s. The word became notorious when it was applied by British servicemen to inhabitants of the Falkland Islands in 1983.
