- a large appellation on the Dordogne river near Bordeaux in the west of France growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot grape varieties for its red wines and Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc for its white wines. Within this appellation there are several smaller appellations, e.g. the Monbazillac AOC producing sweet white wines. Dry white wines sell as Bergerac Sec AOC. Wines from the Côtes de Bergerac AOC are of a better quality than basic Bergerac and have a slightly higher alcohol content.
