binary-coded decimal

  • A system for expressing decimal digits in binary format, each decimal digit occupying four bits. For instance, the number 24 in decimal would be 11000 in binary, and 0010 0100 in binary-coded decimal. This avoids errors in conversion and rounding. Its abbreviation is BCD. Also called binary-coded decimal system.
