  • verb to cadge, scrounge, shirk or loaf. Originally the word meant to bully and was a shortening of bludgeon. It later meant to live off immoral earnings. The word, which has given rise to the more common bludger, was introduced to Britain via Australian TV soap operas in the late 1980s.
