  • A routine of the English harlequinade, in which aslippery slide caused shopkeepers to fall headlong when chasing shoplifters(who had previously prepared it). When the harlequinade was reducedto being an afterpiece to the new fairytale pantomimethis and similar routines disappeared. Chambers' Journal of1864 complained: "Do you reflect upon the painful fact the EnglishBoys are now growing up wholly ignorant of the nature and efficacyof the Buttered Slide?"
