  • A ritual dance of Romania, in which the all-male dancers fallinto trances and supposedly heal people who are possessed by evilspirits. It is performed at Whitsuntide. In a Muntenian version, thedances alternate with brief comic plays whose central character isa clown wearing a phallus. Although he is described as a mute, theclown chatters away about such subjects as sex and money. During theperiod of performance, the dancers avoid social contact and abstainfrom sexual intercourse.
