call. Don't call us, we'll call you

Definition

Theater

  • A phrase supposedly used by casting directors to say goodbye to unsuccessful applicants at auditions. The implication, of course, is that no such call will be made. The phrase, which dates from the 1940s, is now often used in a jocular way to get rid of anyone offering to sell something or provide a service. It is often shortened to 'Don't call us'.
