  • plural noun allowances for the purchase of fixed assets, such as machinery, which may be deducted from a company’s profits and so reduce its tax liability. Under current UK law, depreciation is not allowable for tax on profits, whereas capital allowances, based on the value of fixed assets owned by the company, are tax-allowable.
