• The fruit of a small evergreen tree, Averrhoa carambola, from Southeast Asia which, when cut across its axis, has the appearance of a five-pointed star. The crisp yellow flesh has an acid, sweet and aromatic flavour and it is often used for decoration. The flavour and colour are improved by poaching it in a little light syrup. It can also be used for jam and chutney.
