  • Oscar Hammerstein's 1943 reworking of Bizet's opera for anall-Black cast. The setting is transferred from the cigarette factoryin Seville to a wartime parachute factory in the Southern US; the bullfighterEscamillo becomes a boxer named Husky Miller. The faithless Carmenis finally stabbed to death by Joe, her sweetheart, outside the boxingring. The songs, many of which are based on Bizet's score, include'Beat Out Dat Rhythm on a Drum', 'Dat's Love', and 'My Joe'.
