  • The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is a federal agency within the US Department of Health and Human Services. Within it, the Office of Clinical Standards and Quality Programs evaluates the success of interventions in Medicare, Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program, it identifies and develops best practices and techniques in quality improvement and oversees implementation of these techniques, develops and collaborates on demonstration projects to test and promote quality measurement and improvement and develops, tests and evaluates, adopts and supports performance measurement systems (quality indicators). It was formerly known as the Health Care Financing Administration.
