Ceres

Definition

Astronomy

  • The first asteroid to be discovered, and with a diameter of some 500km much the largest. Ceres was discovered by the monk Giuseppe Piazzi on New Year’s Day 1801, as part of a search for the planet implied by Bode’s Law: except that Bode had allowed for one planet, not the several thousand asteroids now known.
