chara’

Definition

Slang

  • noun a motor coach. From the word charabanc (in french char à bancs, meaning a carriage with benches), widespread from at least the 1920s into the 1950s as a rather pretentious alternative to coach, and used by tour operators and their customers. The word in full was pronounced ‘sharrabong’ or ‘sharrabang’, and the shortening likewise. Elderly speakers still occasionally use the term.
