Chrysostomos Staberl



  • A comic character of the 19th-century Viennese theater, whois usually portrayed as a happy but crafty umbrella-maker. His characteris similar to that of the earlier clowns Hanswurst and Kasperl.Introduced by the Austrian playwright Adolf Bäuerle in his Bürgervon Wien (1813), he featured in numerous later comedies by Bäuerleand others. The role was created by Ignaz Schuster and refined byKarl Carl, who introduced Staberl to the Munich stage, from whencethe character spread throughout Germany.
