  • The great amphitheatre of ancient Rome; its name is though torefer to the colossal statue of Nero that stood nearby about 70. It was begun by Vespasian in 72 AD and for 400 years was the scene of gladiatorial contests, mock battles, and other public spectacles. The name has since been applied to other large theaters, such as the London Coliseum. Compare Palladium.
