  • A labor union organized in 1935 for the purpose of representing industrial workers. The CIO was created as a result of a dispute with the American Federation of labor (AFL). John L. lewis, president of United Mine Workers and a member of the CIO, was instrumental in merging the AFL and CIO in 1955.
