• In ancient Irish legend, a king of Ulster at the start ofthe Christian era. He was the guardian of Cuchulain andalso responsible for the upbringing of Deirdre; his passion for hereventually led to her flight and death. He is said to have died ofanger on hearing of Christ's crucifixion. He appears as a characterin several works of the Irish Dramatic Renaissance, including playsby Yeats, Synge, and AE.
