consumer confidence index
- A leading indicator of the level of optimism within the consumer base of the economy. In the U.S., consumer confidence factors are analyzed from a monthly survey of 5,000 households. The surveys include questions related to spending and savings levels as well as current and future expectations of economic health. This index was started in 1967. Currently, baseline numbers are calculated from those associated with 1985 levels, which is set at a standard of 100 for comparison purposes over different time periods. Higher numbers are considered positive. Depending on the level of strength, this index can positively affect the value of the dollar and impact Forex trading.
