Cosmic Background Explorer

  • US satellite launched in November 1989, and operational until 1993. It was equipped for only one, very important, experiment, to study the structure of the cosmic background radiation. It turns out that the radiation is homogeneous enough to be unmistakably associated with the origin of the universe, but varies slightly according to the direction from which it is being received, an observation which accords with theory by allowing for enough inhomogeneity in the early universe for structure – including galaxies – to form.
