cosmic microwave background
- A uniform bath of radiation which is believed to permeate all of space and to have originated with the big bang. The spectrum of this radiation corresponds to that of a blackbody at about 2.73 K, peaking in the microwave region. It is a source of cosmic noise. Its abbreviation is CMB. Also called cosmic microwave radiation, cosmic background radiation, cosmic microwave background radiation, or microwave background.
