  • An algorithm, utilized in cryptography, that compresses a variable-sized input into a fixed-sized output. Such an algorithm is one-way, meaning that it is extraordinarily difficult to derive the input value from the output value. Used, for instance, in the creation of digital signatures. Also called cryptographic hash algorithm, or cryptographic hash.
