  • A numerical reference given to all established currencies by the International Standard Organization for purposes of classification by banks, business and foreign exchange markets. In the example of the U.S. dollar, the first two letters of the code represent the alpha code of the country, as in US, and the third represents the currency of the country, as in D, to create a three letter currency code, as in USD.
